Tank Assignment

This weeks assignment was to design a tank or mech using perspective and lighting techniques we learned in class. I started with a moodboard to gather some reference and get some ideas.

Afterwards, I did a few thumbnails to generate my ideas and work out what kind of tank I wanted I was focusing on shapes mostly.

My designs steered me towards a legged tank, so i started to use my designs and played around with the shapes some more to result in this crab tank, I had major trouble with the lighting methods but i tried my best.

Insectoid Design

For the past two weeks we were given an assignment to design an insectoid of any type, I didnt really know what type of thing I wanted at first so I decided to just research as much as possible and find some cool things that I could include in the design process. I gathered a moodboard to help this.

After this I did a series of studies on some of the characteristics of insects, I made some quick thumbnails with notes and did a paint study to try and get some colours and textures in my head.

After the studies I felt pretty comfortable with drawing insects and I learned quite a lot about how they work from it so it was extremely useful. I moved on to some designs and I still didnt really know what I wanted so I just wanted to make these designs as diverse as possible and have some fun with them.

At this point I knew what I wanted to create. His name is Vei'rha and he is a towering general of an army of alien bugs. He is ruthless and is intent on not only killing his enemies, but making sure they die screaming. His main trait is intimidation as he believes that it is necessary for not only scaring the shit out of those who cross him, but disciplining his soldiers.

Monster Design

For our halloween brief, we were tasked with designing a monster of any kind; vampire, werewolves, mutant frogs, anything we could think of. I had a lot of choices so I decided to gather a clump of reference from online on monsters the I liked the look of:

After that disturbing experience I thought it would be best to do do some loose ideas so that i could focus on certain basic ideas.

Next I moved on to a few designs, starting off with a few silhouettes and then working into some of the ones I liked.

After that I was ready to move onto the final design. I wanted a few puss boils filled with gas and some grotesque swamp dwelling monster with acid and all of that good stuff, so I started playing around with shapes and combining some ideas from my designs to get Gooball here:

Games Encounters - 'Midnight' One Sheet

Adobe Photoshop - Future Weapon Assignment

Our assignment this week was to design a futuristic weapon that utilized bullets or other kinds of projectiles, laser based weapons were not included.

From the very get go, i wanted to design a hand gun that packed a punch. I started with a mood board, collecting lots of source images to give me inspiration and a reference point to start with the studies.

After gathering images, I made a few quick sketches to try and figure out the structure of the guns in order to give myself a bit more help in figuring them out so I could begin to draw them almost second nature.

When I finally approached the starting designs, I drew out a few rough silhouettes to just try and fins some interesting shapes. I then started to add more and more detail to the shapes I liked the most and came up with a few basic concepts. By the end of this I knew the exact kind of shape I wanted my gun to be.

This was the final design that i came up with. I combined two of the shapes from my concepts that i liked the most. It is a small combat firearm that is used for concealed high pressure shots. The bullet canister is fillet from the back and the plasma energy inside the barrel causes the pressure to increase dramatically as it reacts to the ignited gunpowder. This handgun requires a lot of training as even the slightest mistake can easily cause a lost limb.

Adobe Photoshop - Tentacle Assignment

Our latest assignment was to design a tentacle based creature. It is designed to help us better understand conceptual art and try and encourage us to use reference and ideas to help us.

Above is a mood board I gathered from the internet to better understand the ideas of some of these creatures and to help me grasp some ideas of my own. I picked up a lot of inspiration and also started to have better knowledge of certain creatures and how tentacles behaved.

After gathering reference, I decided it would be best to complete a short study of tentacles and their shapes so I can work out how they work for future drawing. I quickly sketched out 10 small thumbnails of some flailing tentacles and as i progressed i definitely learned a lot. Afterwards I decided to do a small speed paint study below to work out colours and texture.

Next, I started designing. Using the reference from my mood board, I started sketching out quick shapes and making some silhouettes if I didn't like the way the sketch was going before hand. Out of these quick sketches my favourites were number 3 and number 6 because number 3 was a fun little idea of the tentacles actually working to keep the figure connected to its own body structure, while i liked number 6 because by the time i had got there i already had a solid foundation in my head of what i wanted this creature to be and i really liked the hostile nature of the tentacles as they are pointing ahead of it.

This was the final result I came up with for the design of the creature. During the design phase, I wanted to create a small and fast creature that was more of a predator based animal. I began to look up ambush predators and found that the categories of animals that have those are cats and insects. I wanted to incorporate both of those creature types to create a cat like insect that is very nimble. The tentacles flailing out of its back behave as multiple extra limbs, used to aid climbing or catchy prey. It can also camouflage itself by cocooning itself in its own tentacles and waiting close buy to catch the unfortunate soul that crosses him. For the colours i chose a very dark green as it aids him in blending in with most surroundings, and i also wanted to give him red spots of texture over him to give him that extra bit of contrast to make him look more like an organism.

Adobe Photoshop - Colour Practice

This was the colour practice that we did in class today to learn colouring techniques. We were given line art to work on from a previous artists work and we used tools such as the levels and multiply tools to add the different shades of colour.

Adobe Photoshop - Quick Sketch

Quick Sketch. Bedtime now.

Adobe Photoshop - Magician Concepts

During this weeks games encounters session, we were asked to create a small game idea and pitch it in front of the class, my group and I came up with the idea of an underground magic society that has been driven away by the religiously driven government as they deem the practice of magic satanic. The player character works for a gang of magicians that are plotting to overthrow the government and claim their rights again and they send you an errand boy to complete tasks for them that take them one step closer to achieving their goal, one way or another.

This idea got me thinking about how the characters would be designed, so I played around with certain ideas on Photoshop and eventually came up with these ideas. I wanted to create a character that looked somewhat like a rogue, but also that wore quite heavy clothing as he is living in the worst possible conditions. I also wanted to make him look brooding and emotionless as he mirrors the society he is a part of, I also like the idea of his emotions being subject to the emotions of the character.

I had a lot of fun with these, some changes I would probably make is that i would actually like his eyes to properly glow when he is performing magic like in the concept on the bottom left, but make it a lot more prominent and maybe showcase a few more of him in action.

Autodesk Maya - Fish Assignment

Our homework assignment for last weeks visual design session was to learn the basic tools of Maya and to do this buy following along with a course on lynda.com which teaches through modelling a fish from scratch. This was my result.

This was the first model I have ever created using Maya and it was a challenge by all means, new software is always very daunting to me but learning it is part of the fun and is always satisfying once you have accomplished that.
