Adobe Photoshop - Tentacle Assignment

Our latest assignment was to design a tentacle based creature. It is designed to help us better understand conceptual art and try and encourage us to use reference and ideas to help us.

Above is a mood board I gathered from the internet to better understand the ideas of some of these creatures and to help me grasp some ideas of my own. I picked up a lot of inspiration and also started to have better knowledge of certain creatures and how tentacles behaved.

After gathering reference, I decided it would be best to complete a short study of tentacles and their shapes so I can work out how they work for future drawing. I quickly sketched out 10 small thumbnails of some flailing tentacles and as i progressed i definitely learned a lot. Afterwards I decided to do a small speed paint study below to work out colours and texture.

Next, I started designing. Using the reference from my mood board, I started sketching out quick shapes and making some silhouettes if I didn't like the way the sketch was going before hand. Out of these quick sketches my favourites were number 3 and number 6 because number 3 was a fun little idea of the tentacles actually working to keep the figure connected to its own body structure, while i liked number 6 because by the time i had got there i already had a solid foundation in my head of what i wanted this creature to be and i really liked the hostile nature of the tentacles as they are pointing ahead of it.

This was the final result I came up with for the design of the creature. During the design phase, I wanted to create a small and fast creature that was more of a predator based animal. I began to look up ambush predators and found that the categories of animals that have those are cats and insects. I wanted to incorporate both of those creature types to create a cat like insect that is very nimble. The tentacles flailing out of its back behave as multiple extra limbs, used to aid climbing or catchy prey. It can also camouflage itself by cocooning itself in its own tentacles and waiting close buy to catch the unfortunate soul that crosses him. For the colours i chose a very dark green as it aids him in blending in with most surroundings, and i also wanted to give him red spots of texture over him to give him that extra bit of contrast to make him look more like an organism.
